Dr. William B. Shugars, III, D.D.S.

  Dr. William B. Shugars, D.D.S., 86 of Pottsville died Thursday evening at home.   He was born May 10, 1930 the only son of William B. Jr, and Leah Dresch Shugars. William was raised by his fraternal grandmother, Martha W. Potts Shugars, aunt Kathryn L. Shugars, aunt Elizabeth, M. Shugars Gerhard, and husband Charles all of Pottsville.   He attended Pottsville Schools and graduated from Pottsville High School in 1948. He graduated Cum Laude from Mercersburg Academy in 1950, Franklin and Marshall College, 1954 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine with a D.D.S. degree in 1958.   He was a Captain in the Air Force Dental from 1958-1960 and has honorably discharged from the Air Force Reserves in 1972.   William served the community as a general dentist from 1960-1987 having practiced at the Warne Hospital, his offices at 2223 West End Ave and 20 S. 2nd St. in Pottsville. He was on the staff of the Pottsville Hospital and Warne Clinic. He was also the former owner of Behms Restaurant in Tremont.   William was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville where he served on the board of trustees, the Schuylkill Dental Society, Pennsylvania Dental Association, American Dental Association, and the Pottsville Rotary Club where he served on the board of directors. A member and former board of director at Ivyside Swim Club, served on the board of directors of the Catholic Social Agency, where for years he and his wife Leah cared for 21 foster babies thru this agency. A member of the Academy of General Dentistry and was part of the Continuing education program from the University of Pittsburgh. He was also very active in two grief groups, Journey’s of Pottsville and Grief Sharing of Reedsville.   He was preceded in death by his wife Leah Hatter Shugars, in April 2007. Surviving is a son, William C. Shugars and his wife Tammy, Pine Grove; 2 daughters, Barbara S. Charowsky, Pottsville and her husband Jim; Amy L. Shugars, York: 6 grandchildren, Nicholas Shugars, Los Angeles CA, Amanda and Katie Charwosky, Pottsville, Grace Shugars, Wyatt Bettinger and Owen Shugars, York.   Service of remembrance will be held Thursday at 2P.M. from the United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville with the Rev. Sue Marie Baskette officiating. Family and friends are invited to call from 12:30P.M. until the time of services at the church. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions made to Hillside SPCA PO Box 233, Pottsville PA, 17901. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville.   James E.
