Joan M. Monahan

Joan M. Monahan, 81 of Palo Alto, died Saturday morning at home.

She was born September 9, 1934 in Schuylkill Haven daughter of the late Robert and Catherine Collins Curran.

She was a graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School and was employed by the Recorder of Deeds office at the Schuylkill County Courthouse, prior to retiring.

Joan was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville, St. Patrick Seniors, and was a very active volunteer in the church. She was also a member of Pottsville Catholic Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband John “Jack” Monahan in 1975: siblings, Catherine “Kitty” Curran; Agnes Fidler; Robert Curran; William “Red” Curran; and Maureen Curran. Surviving are 2 daughters, Patricia “Patti” Kelly and Maureen “Mickey” Pellish and her husband Tim all of Pottsville: 4 grandchildren, Daniel J. Kelly, Jacqueline Pellish, Attorney Thomas Pellish, all of Pottsville and Kathryn Pellish, Atlanta, GA: 2 brothers James Curran and his wife Abie, Lake Villa, Ill; Leon Curran and his wife Linda, Lake Augusta, IA: a sister, Mary Jane O’Connor and her husband Robert, Seltzer: a sister-in-law, Frances Quirk and her husband Joseph, Pottsville. Joan’s most favorite moments in life were spending time with her grandchildren, all of her friends and her friends at the Coney Island, Yorkville and baking for family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11A.M. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, with Monsignor William F. Glosser as celebrant. Family and friends are invited to call at St. Patrick Monday from 6-8P.M. and Tuesday from 9:30A.M. until the time of mass. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions made to St. Joseph Center for Special Learning, 2075 W. Norwegian St. Pottsville PA, 17901 or Nativity BVM Preservation Fund, 1 Lawton Hill, Pottsville PA, 17901. Interment will be in Queen of the Universe Cemetery, Pottsville.
