James F. "Jim" Clews

August 28, 1928 — January 16, 2016

  James F. “Jim” Clews, 87 of Pottsville died Saturday at Schuylkill Center, Pottsville.   He was born August 28, 1928 in Centralia, son of the late Albert and Kathryn Wayne Clews.   He was a 1946 graduate of Pottsville High School and the former Ford School of Business.   He was an Air Force Veteran.   He was employed by the former Miners National Bank, Pottsville for 36 years prior to retiring.   Jim was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Pottsville and the Walter Griffiths AMVETS Post #180.   In his younger days Jim tried out for the Cleveland Indians, he was known by many as the only left handed short stop in Schuylkill County. He also umpired many baseball games. He was an avid golfer achieving 3 holes in one. Jim was well known for his sense of humor and a cigar a hanging out of his mouth. Sadly though Jim was Philadelphia sports fan all of his life.   He was preceded in death by twin grandsons, James & Patrick Brehony; and a brother, Raymond Clews. Surviving are his wife of 61 years of marriage Margaret Campion Clews; 2 daughters, Barbara L. Brehony and her husband Bill, Shillington; Karen A. Sabol and her husband Gregory, Frackville: 2 grandsons, William and Michael Brehony; a sister, Janet Freeston, Reading: Nieces and nephews.   The family would to thank the staffs of Schuylkill Center and Hospice Compassus for the care they gave to Jim.   Services will be held Thursday at 11:00 A.M. from the James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville, with the Pastor James R. Fidler officiating. Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday evening from 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. and Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. Interment with military honors will be at Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions made to Alzheimer’s Association 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or Hillside SPCA P.O.
