Bonnie Jean Wetzler

March 17, 1931 — September 17, 2014

Bonnie Jean Boltz Wetzler, 83, a longtime resident of Davie and Hollywood, Florida, passed away September 17, 2014. She was born on March 17, 1931 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania to the late Benjamin and Ruth Boltz. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, George Robert Wetzler as did her stepmother, Hulda Boltz. Over the years, she worked as a lab technician in a doctor's office, a file clerk in Broward General Hospital, a driver for Daily Dinners, and retired from the United States Post Office. She was the first female letter carrier in Broward County. Like her husband, George, Bonnie was active in the community. When the Town of Davie did not have enough Girls Soft Ball Coaches to allow all the girls who signed up to play, she stepped up and volunteered to coach. Many of the trees in the parking lot behind the Davie Town Hall were donated from the family tree farm. Bonnie founded the University Drive Land Owners Association working to make sure land owners were treated fairly as road easements cut across their property. When Bonnie learned the Central Broward Drainage District had illegally dug a quarter mile canal across the back of all her neighbors' property she got the district to fill it in for them. She was instrumental in establishing the Boy and Girl Scouts public use pavilion at Wolf Lake Park and planted the first tree there herself. She worked part time at night to help the Davie Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department's Womens Auxiliary, eventually becoming their President for several years and organizing their fund raisers. She was of the Lutheran faith. She is survived by her children: Thomas and Ruth Gamble of Cleveland, Tennessee, George Robert Wetzler, Jr. of Davie, Kirby and Barbara Sides of Davie, Caroline Wylie of Cleveland, Tennessee; her grandchildren: Christopher T. Gamble of Cleveland, Tennessee, Edward and Amy Hall of Sunrise, Summer A. Wylie of Cleveland, Tennessee, Derek Wetzler of Davie, Melanie J. Wylie of Cleveland, Tennessee; her great grandson: Jacob Gamble of Cleveland, Tennessee, her brothers: Benjamin Boltz, his wife, Toni, of Rutland, Vermont and Peter Boltz of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and her sister: Ann Tihansky of Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, as well as numerous extended family members and a host of special friends. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. from Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contribution made in memory of Bonnie Wetzler of Hollywood, Florida to: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
