George Robert Wetzler, 84, a longtime resident of Davie and Hollywood, Florida, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 24, 2014. He was born on October 29, 1929 in New York to the late George and Katherine Wetzlar. His stepmother, Victoria Wetzlar, also preceded him in death. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Navy, after faithfully serving his country. Over the years, he had a television repair business, was a private detective, worked for Retail Credit Company, was a safety inspector for the Florida Hotel and Restaurant Commission and retired from USF&G Insurance where he was a safety engineer. Following his retirement, he was a safety consultant for both Florida Intercoastal Underwriters and Florida Restaurant Underwriters. Active in community affairs, George was the Vice Foreman of the grand jury that indicted mobsters Hymie Martin and Meyer Lansky in the late 60's. He was the first Personnel Director of the Town of Davie and served as Assistant Chief of the Davie Volunteer Fire Department. He was of the Lutheran faith. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Bonnie Boltz Wetzler and his children: Thomas and Ruth Gamble of Cleveland, Tennessee, George Robert Wetzler, Jr. of Davie, Kirby and Barbara Sides of Davie, Caroline Wylie of Cleveland, Tennessee; his grandchildren: Christopher T. Gamble of Cleveland, Tennessee, Edward and Amy Hall of Sunrise, Summer A. Wylie of Cleveland, Tennessee, Derek Wetzler of Davie, Melanie J. Wylie of Cleveland, Tennessee; his great grandson: Jacob Gamble of Cleveland, Tennessee and his brother, Edward Wetzlar and wife, Madeline, of Silver Spring, Maryland, as well as numerous extended family members and a host of special friends There will be a graveside service with military honor at Charles W. Baber Cemetery, 1400 Market Street in Pottsville at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 19th.
