Myrtle Y. Furness, 90, of Pottsville died Tuesday evening at Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson St. She was born March 15, 1921 in Hazleton daughter of the late Webb and Ethel Richards Young. She was a graduate of Hazleton High School and was the former Executive Director and Board member of the YWCA, Pottsville. She was also a volunteer at the Pottsville Hospital and Warne Clinic and Good Samaritan Hospital. Myrtle was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pottsville, a former member of the Pottsville Club Ladies Auxiliary and the former Pottsville Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Myrtle actively participated in fund raising drives for the American Heart Association and the United Way. She was also past president of the Kiawa Club and was a avid bridge player. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwen Alyce; a brother Earl Young, and a sister, Dorothy Zola. Surviving are her husband, Lt. Col. Harold A. Furness, Jr., (Ret.) a son, James and his wife Mazie, Wallace NC; a sister Vivian McElmoyle, Greenville, SC, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions be made to the Pottsville Free Public Library, 217 W. Market St., Pottsville PA, 17901 or the First United Methodist Church, 4th and W. Market St., Pottsville PA, 17901. James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville, is in charge of arrangements.
