Joseph D. Stoffey, Sr., 85 of Pottsville, died peacefully Saturday at Parkland Manor, Allentown.
He was born April 30, 1939 in Coaldale, PA, one of 6 children of the late George and Elizabeth Chaballa Stoffey.
A 1956 graduate of Coaldale High School, Joe enlisted in the United States Army immediately following graduation. A skilled and versatile athlete, Joe was a terrific volleyball player and was often recruited to compete in the top leagues on the military bases where he was stationed.
Following his military service, he moved to Pottsville in 1962. He served as a longtime pipefitter, and then spent 14 years working alongside his kids at the Lehigh Valley Window Pros, before retiring in 2004.
With a passion for sports, Joe was a huge college basketball fan, especially his beloved Duke Blue Devils. You could often find Joe watching a game, enjoying a Yuengling and snacking on his tasty cake pies. He also enjoyed playing cards with family & friends, Pass the Ace was one of his favorites, and he was a whiz at Liar’s Dice. Joe was a strong man but had a sweet gentle side for his grandchildren who he loved dearly.
A true family man, Joe was a devoted member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville, a life member of West End Hose Fire Co., Pottsville, Piper fitters Union Local 527, Wilkes Barre, a social member of Yorkville Hose Fire Co., Pottsville. a social member of Yorkville Hose Fire Co., Pottsville.
He was preceded in death by 3 siblings, Verna Bench, Timothy Stoffey, and Dorothy Zimmerman
Surviving are his beloved wife of 64 years Patricia Schreffler Stoffey; 4 children, Patricia Edelman and her husband Ari, Warren, NJ; James Stoffey and his wife Michele, Lehighton; Joseph D. Stoffey and his wife Tracey, Allentown; Dorothy DeMatt and her husband James, Fogelsville; 9 grandchildren, Daniel, Brian, Eric, Joshua. Morgan, Madilynn, Jim Jr, Jack and Lauren, 1 step-grandson, James; a brother, George Stoffey, Coaldale; a sister, Margaret Shigo, Tamaqua; nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11AM from St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville. Family and friends are invited to a viewing from 9:30AM until the time of mass. Military honors will be rendered following mass at St. Patrick. Interment will be private at Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions in memory of Joe be made to St. Patrick Memorial Fund, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA 17901.
