Joseph R. Welsh, Sr.

Joseph R. Welsh, Sr., 84 of Pottsville, died peacefully Saturday morning at home with his family by his side.

He was born December 2, 1939, in Centralia a son of the late Edward C. and Cecelia Radzai Welsh. 

He was a 1958 graduate of Nativity BVM High School.

He served 6 years in the Army Reserves.

Prior to retiring he was employed by Argo Mills and Alcoa Aluminum.

He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville.

Throughout his life Joe was an avid sports fan. He was also an exceptional athlete in baseball and basketball along with his good friend the late Frank O’Donnell.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas “Todd” Welsh and his wife Carol Welsh Wile.

Surviving are his wife Virginia Schweikert Welsh; his children, Cathy Schappell and her husband Bob, Pottsville; Joseph R. Welsh, Jr. and his wife Lisa, Pottsville; Maureen Webb and her husband Jeffery, Allentown; Michael Welsh and his wife Robin, Pottsville; Colleen York and her husband, David, Coopersburg; 9 grandchildren, Robert “Bobby Schappell, Matthew Schappell, Peyton Webb, Selena Webb, Taylor Welsh; Thomas Welsh, Charlotte Welsh, Elijah York and Ethan York; 2 brothers, Edward Welsh and his wife Madeline “Tootie”, Louise Welsh and his wife Darlene; nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Joe’s wishes there will be a private service only for his immediate family. Interment will be private in St. Bertha Cemetery, Tuscarora. The family would prefer remembrances in the form on contributions in memory of Joe be made to St. Patrick Memorial Fund, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA 17901. Arrangements are under the care of James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville.
